Killer Tabata Workout

August 31st, 2009

82793325 What is a Tabata Workout?  After trying this I think the intent must be to kill you.  I’ve got a little app on my iPhone called Workout365.  This handy dandy app gives you a workout routine to perform 365 days a year.

I don’t use it often.  But a two or three times a week I’ll check it even if I don’t do the routine.  Glancing over today’s routine I noticed that the application had something called a Tabata Clock.  Not knowing what this was I Googled it.

I read series of articles on the Tabata philosophy of training.   Tabata workouts center around the simple principle of 4 minutes of very intense exercise.  Perform 8 sets of 20 seconds of high intense work with 10 seconds of rest.  You can read more on this Squidoo lens called ‘Is Tabata Training The Ultimate Cardio Workout.

After trying this I think it is.  After about 40 seconds I needed a 30 second brake.  After the 3rd set I need 50 seconds between sets.  Even with that I could not complete the 8 sets.  Keep in mind I’m considered to be in excellen physical conditon.  I don’t say this to brag.  The point I’m trying to make is that I thought this would be a breeze.  Instead within 3 minutes I found myself on my backside of the gym floor thinking “Oh God…I’m going to pass out”.

You can do a Tabata style workout with almost any type of training.  The above referenced article has tons of information on how to do this.

Here’s the workout I attempted today.

The only difference is that I only used 95 pounds.  That’s right 95 pounds.  That’s a 25 pound plate on each side of a 45 popund barbell.

Now I can Sumo deadlift 315 pounds for 4 sets of 10 reps.  But this was a way different animal.  I finished the workout 30 minutes ago and I’m still sweating.

Read the Squidoo lens I referenced above, decide if you’ll dare to try Tabata in your routine, and check back in and let me know what you think by adding a comment.
